The Garden You Paid For Deserves an Evening Show

Arlington gardeners put real work into their beds — the azaleas, the hydrangeas, the ornamental grasses, the perennials. All of it vanishes at sundown. Garden bed lighting brings it back: soft uplights that make shrubs glow, tiny down-lights that pick out flowers, wash lights that turn a hedge into a backdrop.

How We Light Plantings

Shrub and foundation planting up-lights. Small fixtures tucked in the mulch aim up through shrubs. Evergreens glow deep green; flowering shrubs become clouds of light in bloom season.

Ornamental grass back-lighting. This is a designer favorite. A light placed behind ornamental grasses makes every blade glow like fiber optics. Maiden grass, muhly grass, fountain grass — all stunning.

Flower bed accents. Low, soft fixtures that pick out color masses without blasting them. Seasonal color gets a second shift.

Hedge and border washes. A row of well lights washes a hedge or fence line in even light, giving the whole bed a finished backdrop.

Statuary and focal points. That urn, sculpture, or birdbath you love? A dedicated accent light makes it the exclamation point of the bed.

Fixtures That Disappear

Bed lighting only works if you see the effect, not the hardware. We use compact fixtures in dark bronze or black finishes, tucked behind the front row of plants, with wire buried in the mulch. In daylight, the bed looks untouched. At night, it glows. When the garden gets replanted or mulched, the fixtures ride along — we show you how to work around them, and our maintenance service re-aims them after big garden changes.

Seasonal Thinking

A good bed design thinks in four seasons. Spring bulbs and flowering shrubs, summer perennials, fall color, winter evergreen structure — the fixtures stay, the show changes. We place lights to flatter the bed's year-round backbone (evergreens, grasses, hardscape) so it looks good even in February, then the seasonal stars take turns in the spotlight.

Gentle on Plants

LED fixtures run cool, so they will not scorch leaves or dry out mulch the way old halogens did. We keep fixtures a sensible distance from plant crowns and use shields so the light hits the plant, not the bedroom window behind it.

Designing for Four Seasons

The best garden lighting thinks beyond whatever is blooming today. We anchor the design on the bed's year-round backbone — evergreens, ornamental grasses, hardscape edges, and focal points like urns or sculptures — so the bed looks composed even in February. Then the seasonal stars take turns: spring bulbs and flowering shrubs, summer perennials, fall color. The fixtures stay put; the show changes with the calendar.

This is why we place lights for structure first and flowers second. A fixture aimed at a perennial that dies back in winter is a fixture doing nothing for four months. A fixture washing an evergreen behind those perennials works all year and flatters the flowers when they arrive.

Working With Your Gardener

Many of our clients have a landscaper or a serious gardening habit — and garden lighting has to coexist with both. We show you and your gardener exactly where fixtures and wire run, so mulch gets piled around them, not over them. Fixtures are placed to survive normal bed maintenance: sturdy enough for accidental bumps, positioned out of the main digging zones.

When beds get replanted or redesigned, the lighting usually stays — we just re-aim. A quick maintenance visit after a big replanting keeps every fixture doing its job. Think of the lighting as part of the garden's infrastructure, like irrigation: installed once, adjusted as the garden evolves.

How It Works: Our Process

Step 1 — Garden walk-through. We tour your beds with you — what you love, what is new, what the backbone plantings are — and note focal points and seasonal highlights.

Step 2 — Design and proposal. Fixture plan per bed: up-lights, accents, washes, and focal lighting, with itemized pricing.

Step 3 — Installation. Compact fixtures tucked behind plantings, wire buried in mulch, connected to a garden zone on your controls.

Step 4 — Night aiming. We return after dark to aim every fixture at its planting and verify the beds read as glowing compositions, not lit hardware.

Lighting New Beds and Renovations

If you are putting in new planting beds, talk to us before the plants go in. Running wire and setting fixtures in an empty bed is fast, clean, and inexpensive — no working around established root systems, no careful digging. We coordinate with your landscaper on the planting plan so fixtures land in the right spots the first time: up-lights where the specimen shrubs will go, washes along the bed's back edge, accents at the focal points.

For bed renovations, we work around what stays. Established shrubs keep their root zones; we hand-dig wire runs and place fixtures in the gaps. If the renovation moves plants around significantly, we come back afterward and re-aim everything. The lighting adapts to the garden — never the other way around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the lights damage my plants?

No. LED fixtures run cool to the touch — nothing like the old halogen lights that could scorch leaves. We also position fixtures with clearance from plant crowns.

What happens when I replant or re-mulch the beds?

The fixtures stay. They are designed to be worked around — just mulch over the wire and avoid burying the fixture faces. If a big replanting moves things around, our maintenance service will re-aim everything.

Can you light my garden if I have a small yard?

Absolutely. Small gardens often benefit the most — three or four well-placed fixtures can make a tiny courtyard feel like a resort at night.

Do garden lights stay on all night?

That is up to you. Most clients run them on a schedule — on at dusk, off around midnight — through our smart controls.
