Why Light Works

Burglars want three things: darkness, cover, and easy access. Lighting takes away the first two. A well-lit property with no blind spots is simply a harder target — and criminals choose easy targets. You do not need stadium brightness. You need no place to hide.

The Security Lighting Strategy

Layer 1 — Always-on presence. Facade, path, and entry lighting on every night, dusk to dawn (or dusk to midnight). A lit home looks occupied and cared for. This is your baseline — and it is also just beautiful.

Layer 2 — Motion response.Motion-sensor floods on approaches: driveways, side gates, rear doors. Someone enters the zone, the light snaps on. The sudden change is what startles and exposes.

Layer 3 — No blind spots. Walk the property at night and find the dark pockets — behind the garage, along the fence, the side yard. Each gets a fixture. An intruder should not be able to cross your property unseen.

Layer 4 — Smart away mode.Smart controls run realistic schedules while you travel — lights on at dusk, varied by zone, looking lived-in. No more telltale dark house.

What Not to Do

Do not blast. One giant floodlight creates harsh shadows — perfect hiding spots — and blinds you to what is beyond the glare. Layered, moderate light beats one bright blast.

Do not annoy. A motion light that triggers for every passing car trains the whole street to ignore it. Aim sensors at your property, tune the sensitivity, and use warm light.

Do not light the neighbor's bedroom. Shield fixtures, aim down, keep light on your property. Security lighting that creates neighbor conflicts gets turned off — defeating the purpose.

Lighting + Landscaping

Security and beauty are not enemies. Trim shrubs below window level (no hiding spots), light the trimmed beds (no dark pockets), and keep entries visible from the street (natural surveillance). The best security lighting is invisible as security — it just looks like a beautiful, well-kept home that nobody would mess with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does landscape lighting really prevent break-ins?

It is one of the most effective simple deterrents. Criminals prefer dark, hidden approaches — lighting removes both. It works best combined with good locks, trimmed shrubs, and neighbors who notice.

What's better: always-on lights or motion sensors?

Both, layered. Always-on lighting for presence and beauty; motion sensors for approaches and blind spots. Each does a job the other cannot.

Will security lighting raise my electric bill a lot?

Barely. LED security fixtures sip power — a whole layered system costs very little to run nightly. See our LED vs. halogen guide.

Can you add security lighting to my existing landscape lights?

Yes. We frequently add a security layer — motion floods on approaches, brighter entries — to existing systems, on the same transformer and controls.
