What the Transformer Does

Every low-voltage lighting system starts at the transformer: a weatherproof box, usually mounted near your house or garage, that converts your home's 120-volt power down to safe 12-volt power for the yard. It is also the system's brain — housing the timer or smart controller, dividing power into zones, and protecting everything with built-in overload shutoffs.

Sizing: The 80% Rule

Transformers are rated in watts (or volt-amps). Add up the wattage of every fixture on the system, and the transformer should be rated for at least 25% more — the 80% rule. A system drawing 240 watts wants a 300-watt transformer. Running a transformer at its absolute limit shortens its life and leaves no room to grow. We always size with headroom.

Why Spare Capacity Matters

Here is the thing nobody tells you at install time: you will add lights later. The back patio project. The new tree. The holiday accents. A transformer sized exactly to day one becomes a replacement job on day 400. We size transformers with 20–30% spare capacity as standard, and we run wire with future zones in mind. Growing the system later means adding fixtures, not replacing the power center.

Multi-Tap and Voltage Drop

Electricity loses a little voltage over long wire runs — "voltage drop." Fixtures at the far end of a long run get dimmer power than fixtures near the transformer. Quality transformers have multiple voltage "taps" (12V, 13V, 14V, 15V) so we can feed long runs a slightly higher voltage that arrives at a perfect 12V. This is one of those invisible details that separates professional installs from DIY kits — even brightness across the whole property, near and far.

Smart Transformers

Modern transformers increasingly come with smart control built in: app control, astronomical timers, zone dimming, and energy monitoring. When we replace an aging transformer during a repair or retrofit, upgrading to a smart unit is often the highest-value move — new capabilities without touching a single fixture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size transformer do I need?

It depends on your total fixture wattage plus 25% headroom. We calculate it exactly from your lighting design — it is part of every proposal.

Can I add lights to my system later?

Yes, if the transformer was sized with spare capacity — which ours always are. Adding fixtures later is straightforward; replacing an undersized transformer is not.

My transformer buzzes. Is that bad?

A loud buzz often means it is overloaded or failing. Have us check it — a transformer working too hard is living on borrowed time.

Where does the transformer go?

On or near the house or garage, close to an outdoor GFCI outlet and central to the lighting zones. We choose a discreet spot — they are not beautiful, so we tuck them out of sight.
