The Short Version: LED Won

Twenty years ago, landscape lighting meant halogen — hot, power-hungry bulbs you replaced constantly. Then LED grew up. Today there is no contest: LED uses a fraction of the power, lasts years instead of months, runs cool, and the light quality caught up and passed halogen. Every system we install is LED. If you have an old halogen system, an LED retrofit is the best upgrade you can make.

Head to Head

Energy use. An LED fixture uses roughly one-fifth to one-tenth the power of the halogen it replaces. A whole yard of LED lights can run for less than a single old halogen flood used to cost. On a system that runs every night, that adds up fast.

Lifespan. Halogen landscape bulbs lasted a year or two — less in practice, because heat and weather are brutal. LED lamps are rated for tens of thousands of hours: years of nightly use. No more annual bulb-change ritual on a ladder.

Heat. Halogens ran hot enough to burn skin, scorch plants, and melt cheap fixtures. LEDs run cool to the touch. That matters for fixtures near plants, in trees, and anywhere kids or pets roam.

Light quality. Early LEDs were harsh and blue. Modern warm-white LEDs (2700K–3000K) match halogen's beloved warm glow — with better color consistency from fixture to fixture.

Size. LEDs are tiny, which means smaller, more hideable fixtures. Better designs, less visible hardware.

What About Existing Halogen Systems?

Do not rip it out. The wire, transformer (usually), and fixture housings are often fine. An LED retrofit swaps just the lamps — sometimes the fixtures too, if they are corroded — and the system gets a second life at a fraction of new-install cost. Power draw drops so much that transformer capacity stops being a worry. See our repair and retrofit page.

Choosing LED Color Temperature

For homes, 2700K (warm white) is the standard — it flatters brick, stone, wood, and foliage. 3000K is slightly crisper and suits modern architecture. Anything cooler (4000K+) looks commercial and harsh in a residential yard. We standardize on warm tones across every design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my old halogen fixtures use LED bulbs?

Often, yes. Many halogen fixtures accept LED retrofit lamps directly. We check your fixtures' condition during a service visit — if the housings are sound, a lamp swap is all it takes.

Will LED really lower my electric bill?

Dramatically for lighting. LED uses a fraction of halogen's power, so a converted system costs very little to run nightly. Most homeowners notice the difference.

Do LED bulbs really last years?

Yes. Quality LED lamps are rated for tens of thousands of hours — years of nightly use. It is the end of the annual bulb-replacement ritual.

Is the light as warm and nice as halogen?

Modern warm-white LEDs match halogen's cozy glow. We use 2700K–3000K lamps that flatter homes and gardens — no harsh blue light.
