The Wrong Question (and the Right One)

"How many lights do I need?" is the question everyone asks — and it is slightly the wrong question. The right question is: "What do I want to see at night?" A facade, a path, a tree, a patio. Each effect takes a certain number of fixtures. Count the effects, and the fixture count follows.

Rough Guide by Project

Front walkway: a fixture every 6–8 feet, staggered sides. A typical 30-foot walk takes 4–5 path lights.

Home facade: a wash fixture every 8–12 feet of wall, plus accents for columns, entries, and gables. A typical single-story front takes 4–8 fixtures; two-story colonials take more.

Specimen tree: 1–3 up-lights for a medium tree; large trees take 3–5. Moonlighting takes 1–2 fixtures high in the canopy.

Deck or patio: step lights for every few steps, plus rail, post, or down-lights for the seating area. A typical patio takes 6–12 fixtures.

Full front yard: facade + walk + one tree + bed accents typically lands around 12–20 fixtures.

Full property: front, sides, back, patio, trees, and security commonly totals 30–60 fixtures on an average Arlington lot.

Why Ranges, Not Numbers

Every property is different — lot size, architecture, tree count, and how dramatic you want it. These ranges help you think in the right scale. The exact count comes from a real design: we walk the property, plan each effect, and count fixtures effect by effect. That is what the free consultation is for.

More Is Not Better

Here is the trap: assuming more fixtures equals better lighting. It does not. Ten well-placed fixtures beat twenty random ones every time. A good designer uses the fewest fixtures that achieve the effect — which also means a smaller transformer, less wire, and lower cost. If a quote seems fixture-heavy, ask what each one does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you give me an exact fixture count for my home?

Yes — during the free consultation. We design effect by effect and count fixtures from the plan, so the number is exact for your property, not a guess.

Is there such a thing as too many lights?

Absolutely. Over-lit yards look harsh and flat. Restraint and contrast — lit focal points against darker areas — is what makes lighting beautiful.

How does fixture count affect cost?

It is the biggest cost driver: each fixture is hardware plus install labor. That is why efficient design — fewer, better-placed fixtures — saves money.

Can I start small and add more later?

Yes. We size the transformer with spare capacity and plan wire runs for future additions. Many clients start with the front yard and expand later.
